Turkey Day is here and was I excited.  It’s one of my favorite holidays – I get to stuff myself with all the incredible food.  This was the very first holiday that my family and I celebrated when we came to this country.  It always reminds me of my parents.  Now, my children and grandchildren come celebrate with me – as do many of the other residents’.  We have a great big setup in the cafeteria and even spill over into the adjoining Events Room.  There were 5 huge turkeys, tons of sides of dressing, cranberries, yams, crunchy green beans, everything traditional.  And, who could forget the pumpkin, yam and apple pies.  There was something for everyone.  It was delicious.  After dinner, those who could move played cards and watched TV.  But, don’t ask me what they watched.  I fell asleep in a big easy chair.  Hope I didn’t snore.

Hanukkah, Chanukkah… which way do you spell it?  We prefer with the “c” even though the calendars don’t agree.   So, we brought out a great big menorrah that takes 6″ tall candles.  We had a drawing to see who gets to light them.  So, for 8 nights, we will honor our heritage.  Many of us had our grandchildren over, playing with dreidels.  We handed out chocolate gelt (coins) to all… not  for just the kids.  The chef made potatoe latkes (pancakes) with sour cream and apple sauce. We had cookies in the shapes of driedels and stars. It was a great meal with an evening filled with lots of fun for all.

Today, we had a remembrance of our Veterans, which many of us are.  We honored our fallen friends and relatives with little flags at our tables.  We had a moment of prayer before lunch.  We had a relaxing afternoon with card games and reading good books over hot cocoa and coffee.
